Myanmar Destination Guides > Country Overview
Myanmar (formerly known as Burma, until 1988)
remains, even today, one of the world’s
most mysterious and undiscovered destinations.
Until recently it was one of Asia’s most
inaccessible countries, restricting visitors to
just a few limited areas. Because Myanmar had
closed its doors on the world, it had consequently
escaped the excesses of commercialisation and
retained an almost untouched Buddhist way of life.
Situated between India and China, Myanmar (known
as the Golden Land of Pagodas) has a vibrant culture
and a remarkable heritage, offering places of
outstanding natural beauty combined with a history
that spans more than 2000 years. Virgin jungles,
snow capped mountains, breathtaking landscapes,
stunning deserted beaches, unique hill tribes,
spectacular monuments and ancient cities. Myanmar
is a land of traditional Asian culture and values
that is now benefiting from its own expanding
tourism industry that already boasts 5 star hotels,
boutique hotels, and family guesthouses in all
major centres together with beautiful mountain
and beach resorts. Myanmar rewards those who approach
it with an open mind, in this ‘Land of Smiles’,
the visitor can expect to receive a sincere welcome
from warm people.
