Traditional & Arts Markets If you want to experience another genuine part of the daily life of the Balinese people, you may visit the traditional markets and the arts markets. In the Balinese traditional markets, you will find a range of simple stalls stuffed with cooking untensils, spices and groceries. Meanwhile, in the arts markets, the handicrafts are dominant.
The main difference between the markets and the fixed-price supermarkets or department stores, is that in the markets you can haggle. But you will need a special strategy in persuading the vendors to give you the best prices.
After shopping around the market, you may not be able to carry everything by yourself, but this shouldn't be a problem because you will be offered help by the ‘Tukang Suun’ - women who specialize in carrying customers' shopping to the parking area.
They will put all of your shopping into a big woven bamboo basket, which they then carry on their heads. You will be amazed at the strength of these heroines, they are not young anymore but they seem to be as strong as any of the young people. They do this work for economic reasons, living in a city is expensive and the cost of living is high, so they have to work hard to survive and support their families. |
